Playing to Win book review

Kia ora today we had to write a book review about the book that we have been reading I have been reading Playing to Win. Here is my book review.

Playing to Win is really cool I like how in most of the chapter they had a cliff hanger at the end of them. It  is a really good book because of all the drama in the story with Todd and Denny. I would rate this story a 4.5 because it need more like what happend next with Denny and Alice and what Todd think about them going out. In the story he main character are Todd, Alice, Denny and Clara they all played a good part in the story. I would recommend this to people who like high school drama and like books that were made in New Zealand because I think this book a made is New Zealand because the author is from new Zealand the author name is Fleur Beale. my favourite part in the book a when Denny helps the guy in the car crash because I think that it was really whole some because he did not have to help the man but if he did not then the man would have died then and there. I picked this book because I play rugby I go to a high school and the author is from New Zealand.

Kia ora for the past few week we had to write a speech about our on topic I choose bullying because it is a big problem in New Zealand. I like how we could write our on speech an then we could work so it like we were going to present but we only have to present it if we didn't want to. I felt challenged when we had so pick a topic because when I looked at people idea I like of that but I could not do that because it would be copying but then I just thought about bullying. I think that I have improved because my group when got videoed they just looks down at there speech but not at the camera but when I would talk  I would just look at my work for a little bit just to know what I was about to talk about. The purpose of persuasive writing is to get your audience to be on your side of something that people think about like someone in my group was talking about why smoking should be banned so that is his opinion and he back his opinion with his speech. This is my speech.

100 word challenge

Today we had to write a 100 word challenge about magical bubbles that take you anywhere that you want to go. where would yo want to go? 

I went for a walk one day just around my block. I saw these things just falling from the sky.

They looked like bubbles but they had someone or something in them. What is this what I think it is?

Are those aliens? But when they landed they were just humans not aliens. I ran up to them and asked them what they were in and they told me that they are magical bubbles

they take you anywhere you want to go. I really wanted to go to pairs at that time so I asked if I could use it.

Playing to Win Weekly Task and fast finish

 Today we had to pick a task to do from a board I picked to make a book cover for Playing to Win. I choose these pictures because the mud from the rugby field rugby balls because that is what they play with and then a silhouette to add some pop to it and then we have the title and the author in the middle.  

Kia ora today in reading a group of us finished our weekly task's so we went on to a fast finish task and in the group of people that i did it with was Shanaya, Carla and Alexia. we had to make a movie trailer for  playing to win the character that i played was Alice and yes a girl Shanaya played Todd, Alexia played Denny and Carla played Clara.

kia ora today i read chapters eight and nine and now i am doing the questions that we have been set to do because we do not have discussion on Friday because we do not have school on Friday because of the long weekend.

Denny has lots of responsibilities in his life; he helps his Mum with finances, has a job, he takes care of his sisters and is part of a team. Do you think these are reasonable responsibilities for a sixteen year old? Why or why not?  i think that it is  to have a job at sixteen and to help out with finance because it will help when he leaves home and lives by himself

What responsibilities do you have in your life? i can not think of my responsibilities.

 How do you manage them and make sure you are completing everything you are trusted to do? if i need to do something  i wait a little bit and hen i do the job that i have to do.

Think about what you do at school and at home or in your spare time. Denny feels pressured to drink at the party, but he still says no. Why do you think the boys were pressuring him? because they want him to enjoy himself and not be the one that leaves early because he does not drink 

Why do you think it is important to stand up for your beliefs?  because if you do not then why should people have beliefs.

What values do you think he was showing by saying no to underaged drinking? i think that it is good because you do not want to messup your head because you drink when you we sixteen.

Today we had to do a 100 word challenge about footprints in snow here is my story i hope you like it.

Snowy day

“Time to go to work AHHHHHHHHHHHH” Time to get up and get ready to go to work. Now to wake up my kids so that they can get ready to go to school. “Hunny time to get up” “Ok mum”

“Mum it is snowing!!” “yeah but you got to get ready so that i am not late and so that you are not late for school” “Ok but why are there footprints out on our lawn?” “It might of just been a cat or something like that just do worry about it and get ready for school” “but it is human”

gym expectations

Today we had to write down expectations for P.E when we come to the gym.Those people without P.E gear ill not participate and receive a consequence.Before coming into the gym you must line up a a class outside the door.Once you are changed int your P.E gear you must come and sit down where the teacher ha asked to sit.All gear must be left alone until the teacher has instructed you to use it.

Week Two Novel Study

For reading we had to do a character description the first one is and example from the teacher but the rest is my work. please leave some feed back for what I can do next time.

Going Back to My Primary School (South Hornby)

 last week Mr Scott choose some people to go back to there primary school to tell them what we do at hornby high school. My primary school is south hornby school I got chosen to go to south hornby to tell them about hurumanu I was exited about going but when I was there and it was my turn to talk I was a bit stage fright but I got through it here is my speech.

Kia ora my name is Ashton I am a year 8 at hornby high school I use to go to south hornby any way today I am going to talk to you about hurumanu in hurumanu we get the intermediate children ready to choose what they want to do for the rest of high school in hururmanu we do P.E, Art, Drama, science, health, as well as doing those we also do some subjects that will be familiar to yous like writing reading and maths that get joined with the hurumanu subjects for this year we have P.E with maths, art with writing, health with maths social science with reading drama with reading, writing with science and writing with science.

Today I had to write a 100 word challenge about a picture that is below my story hope you like it please enjoy.

I was cold and sad with no one around me. What was that!!? I keep seeing things.

I wish that I could have enough energy to hunt and eat something but I have not had water in days.

All that I have is this thin blanket and the rocks and sticks to lay on to sleep. I keep hearing voices

go away, they keep saying wake up, wake up. But one morning I woke up but I was not in the woods

I was in the vet I hate the vet they always stick something in me but they treatssss!!!!!!

Think about what helped you feel like you fit in? When I joined karate I did not know what to do and so the people that where around helped me and made sure I knew what to do and what not to do.

Did someone help you out? Yes not just one person helped but two people helped me when I got stuck.

What advice would you give Denny as he navigates these changes in his world? My advice to Denny would be to talk to Todd and try to make up for everything that has happend so that he was now on the good side of Todd.

digital blackout poem (art)

Kia ora the last time I did art I had to do a digital blackout poem we get a story and then we have to select the words that we want not the blackout. We had to select the story from a classic story mine as from Alice and the wonderland. I did not know that I could select different words so that is the one that I had. I liked doing the digital poetry because it made less effort and was really easy to use. Here is my blackout poem.

novel study (playing to win)

 Today I finished reading chapter 1 and 2 for novel study if you do not know what I am reading I am reading Playing to Win it I about a guy that move to a new school and want's to get into the first fifteen (rugby). Today I had to rite a summary for the first to chapter and hat I think will happen next.

The main event that has happen is that Denny enrolled for his new school and also bought a new car that would run but not as good as a new car would because him and his mum are struggling for money he also went for a job interview and got the job on that day. At school he met some people because he saw a Honda that he liked and so the next day he parked where they parked and when he was in class a guy came in and started to throw a tantrum because someone parked in his spot Denny quickly realised that it was him and told him. Turns out his name is Todd he looks like he would play in the rugby team. Every day after school he would go and toot his horn at his sister's school rose and Lucy when they got home they would go and get something to eat and then go to the park so the Denny could train and the girls would help him in many ways. The other people he met were Alice Pete sally and Clara. Pete played in the rugby team and told Denny that he should play for the touch team so that he can get in.

Blackout poetry

Today we had to create a black out poem a black out poem is when you get a chunk of words and you black out with a vivid the words that you do not need. The purpose is that you reuse news paper and you make a poem at the same time. It a hard at first because I was confused because I was not sure what to not blackout the items hat i used was some news paper some scissors glue vivid coloured paper and a black pen. so first you pick a section that you want to use then you read through that section and pick out the words you want and draw a rectangle around the word and then black out the other words that you do not want. I liked the activity when I knew what to do because it was like finding the secret story in a story.

 Today we had to read an article that had five actions and then we have to say as a result what would happen if you where an up stander with the person who is having a problem.

 Action: Support the person experiencing bullying

    Result: If you build there confidence then they can face the bully with the same power

Action: Distract the bully

    Result: If you distract the bully then they can take there mind off the victim and the victim can get a teacher or someone

Action: Call it

    Result: If you tell them then they could start thinking about what they have done to other people.

Action: Leave and act

    Result: If you do this then they could get hurt so maybe you should go and get the teacher so they can sort it out

Action: Get some other help 

    Result: This would be good o that they have people to talk to and some people to talk to the bully and ask why they are doing it

Today and yesterday we had to do some activity's on pink shirt day the first one that I am showing you i what i did today and the second one I the one that I did yesterday.

Write the rest of the story. What do you think comes next when Mrs Latu speaks to the boys? I think that they ill both lose there school leadership badges and Issac will be really angry at Tomasi.

Think of a time you’ve had to be an upstander or in a similar situation. How were you feeling and why?

I felt scared that I would get punished and I did not d anything other then help my freind.

Drama

Today we had to get a script read to us and we had to draw pictures well miss Clark read a script to us the script is about bullies getting suspended and talking about what they did together before he got suspended and what they are going to do after the suspension is over. could not find the photo of the work that I did.

market day recount

Yesterday hornby high had a market day. I was one of the people that could make a product my group did a game called football challenger. Where you had to try and score a goal with a goalie we made $25 on the day with a profit of $10 which is not that bad but compared to the other groups who made over $100 dollars it is low but we still made some money so we are happy with that. The money you make on the day does not matter it is the people that you make happy. which made us happy but believe me I would want more money but we were happy with what we got. It was good because we only had to spend $15 dollars on the lollies because we asked the P.E director if we could use a goal. We used a shoe box for the lollies that we used for the prize and the ball that we used was my own ball from home. I think next time we could see if we could get more into the middle instead of out he back where no one was and to promote our business even more.

Hello today we had to do a dlo about fairy tale for characterization and e had to learn about theme and moral.

B&E

Hello for the past few weeks we had been doing business and enterprise what is business and enterprise you say well it is when we get into a group of four or less and in that group we have the CEO marketing manger production manager and finance manager. if you want to come to the market day it is a hornby high school this Wednesday everyone can attend.

The thing that i am doing is called football challenger you have to try and score a goal with a goalie the people in my group are TJ, Hassanin, me and jaedun you can have a go for only $2.00 for one turn. and if you score you can get some lollies.

I worked good in my group because I participated in everything that I could with my group.

characterisation

Today we had to watch a video about the gingerbread man and then we had to answer some questions about it.

Who is the protagonist? The gingerbread man is the protagonist because he is the main character 

Who is the antagonist? everyone tat is chasing him because they all want to eat him

What type of character do you think the gingerbread man is and why do you think that? i think he is flat because he does not change in the story.

Give an example of direct characterization about the old lady and old man. they are both lonely  

Give an example of indirect characterization about the gingerbread man. the gingerbread man moved his legs as fast as he can

Come up with three ways you could describe him based on indirect characterization. he likes running he is fast a running he does not want to get caught

Today we had to watch some videos about different types of characters. hope you like this please leave some feed back.

Protagonist is the good guy in the movie 

Antagonist is the bad guy so the guy that you not want to win like the joker

Narrator is the guy that tells us what is happening or what has happened

Flat character is someone in the background that you don’t know about

Dynamic character is a character that changes throughout the story

Static character is a character that does not change in the story

Round character is someone who develops something 

Rugby 7s tournament review

Today we had to write about what we were doing the past few days some people just went to school but me and a few others were out at a tournament for rugby 7s and more people were out doing a tournament for other sports. like football, hockey an volley ball but I competed in rugby 7s.

So for the last two days I was out at a rugby 7s tournament out at nunweek park there were seven schools at the tournament. We won only one game out of nine games. The bad thing of the tournament was how long the games were they were only 14 minute games and 7 minute half's. What I enjoyed was the the teacher that came with us was not strict and was positive even when we lost she did not care the only thing that she cared about was that we were having fun and that we were all being positive. 

So that was what I did in the last few days what did you do in the past few days?

ww1 memorials

Today we had to listen or read a story about war memorials and now we have to answer two questions. hope you like them please leave some feedback.

list 2 reasons that war memorials were built:

1. the memorials were built because when the soldiers died they were buried over seas 

2. the family an Friends of the people that died wanted to have a place where they can go to remember them.

list 3 features of the memorials:

1. some of the memorials had just a concrete design and had there name carved into it.

2. some memorials were a shape of people.

3. some are arches that would lead into somewhere and had there names on it.

science writing.

For the past few days we had to write about navigation in space and how the Polynesians did. After we write our story we get a buddy and we read each others writing and do editing and then left a comment and then we scored the writing with the easttle rubric, here is my writing. Did you know how people used to navigate? Back in the day when people did not have phones and could

not use google maps they used the stars. They knew what way was north because there was a bright start

that would be north. Then there is a cluster of stars that connects to the horizon and that is south. You

might be wondering what about when it is the day. They still sail they use the clouds because if they are

close to an island then the clouds are higher up then what they normally are out in the sea. 

Of course they have to have some entertainment when they are out for a long time.There are groups of

people, Some are the navigators and some are hula dancers. To remember there is a saying never for

north eat for east soggy for south and weet bix for west never eat soggy weet-bix. So for today we are

going into space we use rocket ships and rovers both rocket and rover uses rockets.They need fuel for

the rockets so they can move. 

Unlike the rover the ship needs man or woman power to make it move. So like the rocket ship the boats

needed man or woman power so now you have learnt how they use to navigate. So maybe instead of

using your phone or google maps try this way of navigating.
